Winter Driving in an Electric Car: Essential Tips to Stay Safe, Charged and Ready for the Road. We’ve got you covered!

Winter EV driving tips from E‑Veezy: how to maximise your range, prepare for colder journeys and find competitively priced ultra-rapid charging in Manor Royal, Crawley.

As temperatures drop and the mornings become darker, winter brings a few extra considerations for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. Colder weather can affect battery efficiency, reduce driving range, and increase the time it takes to charge. However, with a little preparation, driving an electric car through winter can be straightforward, comfortable, and convenient.

Whether you’re commuting into Manor Royal, travelling to and from Gatwick Airport, or heading off on a longer winter journey, a few simple habits can help you make the most of your EV.

At E‑Veezy, we’re here to help you keep moving this winter, with ultra-rapid charging available 24 hours a day at our flagship charging hub in Manor Royal, Crawley.

1. Expect a little less range in cold weather

One of the biggest differences EV drivers may notice during winter is a reduction in driving range. Cold temperatures affect battery performance, while heating the cabin, warming the battery and using heated windows and seats all require energy.

The actual impact varies depending on your vehicle, the temperature, your journey and how you use the heating.
Our tip: Plan for a little less range than you would expect in warmer weather. Check your vehicle’s estimated range before setting off, particularly if you’re making a longer journey, and allow a comfortable margin rather than relying on reaching your destination with very little charge remaining.

If you’re travelling further afield, identify charging stops along your route before you leave. A quick top-up can offer extra reassurance when the weather turns colder.

2. Preheat your EV before setting off

Nobody enjoys climbing into a freezing car on a frosty morning! Fortunately, many electric vehicles allow you to preheat the cabin before you leave, often using the manufacturer’s mobile app or a scheduled departure setting.
Where possible, preheat your vehicle while it is connected to a charger. This can reduce the amount of battery energy needed to warm the cabin once you begin driving.

Heated seats and a heated steering wheel, where fitted, can also help you stay comfortable without relying entirely on the cabin heater.

Our tip: Set your departure time in advance, warm the car while it is plugged in and make sure all windows are fully clear of ice and condensation before driving. Never set off until you have a clear view in every direction.

3. Check your tyres, lights, and windscreen

Winter driving is about more than battery range. Wet roads, frost, fog, and icy conditions can all make journeys more challenging, so basic vehicle checks are particularly important.
Before setting off, make time to check:

  • Tyres: Check pressures against your manufacturer’s recommendations and ensure tread depth is adequate. The legal minimum for most UK cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the entire circumference.
  • Lights: Make sure headlights, brake lights and indicators are clean and working properly, particularly during darker mornings and evenings.
  • Windscreen and wipers: Top up screen wash with a suitable winter formulation and check that wiper blades are in good condition.
  • Visibility: Clear all windows, mirrors, lights and number plates of ice, snow, and dirt before driving.
The RAC and Met Office both recommend checking your vehicle before winter journeys and allowing extra time when conditions deteriorate.

Our tip: Keep an ice scraper, de-icer, a warm coat, and a torch in your car. A fully charged mobile phone and suitable breakdown cover are also sensible precautions.

4. Drive smoothly and leave extra space

Smooth driving can help conserve battery energy and improve control in difficult conditions.
Sudden acceleration, sharp braking, and abrupt steering can unsettle a vehicle on wet, snowy, or icy roads. Although regenerative braking can help recover energy, its effect varies by vehicle and setting, so make sure you understand how your car behaves before driving in slippery conditions.

5. Plan your charging stops before you need them

A little planning can make winter EV journeys considerably less stressful. Cold weather can affect both the range available and charging performance, so knowing where you can top up is particularly useful.

If your vehicle offers battery preconditioning for rapid charging, use the manufacturer’s recommended settings when travelling to a suitable rapid charger. A battery at the right temperature may be able to accept energy more efficiently, although charging speeds depend on the vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge and charger capability.

It’s also worth remembering that a charger rated at 400kW does not mean every vehicle will charge at 400kW. Your car will determine the maximum power it can accept.

Our tip: Avoid leaving charging until your battery is nearly empty. A planned top-up can give you more flexibility if traffic builds, temperatures fall or your journey takes longer than expected.
