EV Charging Myths: Things we hear a lot at E-Veezy…and what we’d like you to know

Ultra-rapid EV charging in Crawley, Manor Royal and near Gatwick Airport

The things we hear most about public EV charging

Public EV charging has changed quickly, but some of the concerns drivers have heard over the years have stuck around. We regularly speak to people who expect charging to take hours, assume ultra-rapid chargers are mainly found at motorway services, worry about complicated pricing, or believe they need a different app for every network.

At E-Veezy, our aim is to make public EV charging simple, reliable and useful. Our Northwood Park charging hub in Manor Royal, Crawley is open 24/7, is just minutes from Gatwick Airport and provides 200kW and 400kW ultra-rapid charging. The site has 27 high-power charging bays, including dedicated long-wheelbase van bays, with Greggs and Sainsbury’s Local on site so drivers can use their charging time productively.

Below, we take five of the comments we hear most often and explain how modern ultra-rapid EV charging can fit much more naturally into everyday journeys.

1. “Charging your EV will lose you hours.”

At E-Veezy, you can add range while doing something useful. Instead of treating charging as time that has to be lost, it can become part of something you were already planning to do – grabbing a coffee, picking up shopping, having something to eat or simply taking a short break.

That is an important difference between refuelling and charging. Filling a petrol or diesel car is usually an activity in itself: you stop, stand by the pump, pay and leave. With an EV, you can plug in and walk away while the vehicle charges. At a well-located ultra-rapid charging hub, the time can overlap with another part of your day.

Charging speed still depends on the vehicle, its maximum DC charging capability, battery temperature and state of charge. The 200kW or 400kW rating is the maximum output available from the charger; the vehicle decides how much power it can accept at any given moment. For compatible vehicles, however, ultra-rapid charging can provide a meaningful top-up during a relatively short stop.

Make charging time useful

2. “You only find ultra-rapid charging on motorways.”

Motorway services have an important part to play, but ultra-rapid charging is useful every day too. Drivers should not always have to divert to a motorway service area simply because they want high-power charging.

E-Veezy’s Manor Royal location is designed to serve local residents, businesses, commuters, commercial vehicles, people travelling to or from Gatwick Airport and motorists passing through Crawley. With 200kW and 400kW chargers available 24 hours a day, the hub provides a high-power charging option in a location where people already live, work and travel.

We are particularly proud that the location gives drivers somewhere genuinely useful to spend their charging time. Rather than being isolated from everyday amenities, the charging bays sit alongside Greggs and Sainsbury’s Local, with a landscaped area for a short break.

3. “Public charging comes with hidden pricing.”

We understand why drivers can feel this way. Across public charging, different tariffs, membership prices, app-only rates, connection charges and other pricing structures have sometimes made it difficult to know what a charging session will cost before it starts.

At E-Veezy, we prefer to keep things straightforward. The public charging price is displayed clearly on site so drivers can see the price per kWh before they start charging. There are no hidden connection fees added simply for beginning a session.

We also want to reward customers who use E-Veezy regularly. From time to time we make exclusive discounts available to customers who register their interest through our contact page. This gives us a way to offer additional value while keeping the standard public charging experience simple.

4. “You need a different app or membership for every charging network.”

There are certainly plenty of EV charging apps available, but that does not mean a driver should have to download a new one every time they use a different charging network.

At E-Veezy, customers can pay directly using contactless cards and supported RFID cards, as well as through the ROAM app. E-Veezy is supported by ROAM, which also provides on-site charging support. This gives drivers a choice: use a simple contactless payment when they arrive, or use the ROAM app if they prefer app-based charging and access to their charging history.

The important point is that an app is an option, not an unnecessary barrier. Our goal is for a driver to arrive, understand the price, choose a payment method that suits them, plug in and charge.

5. “Charging speed is not as advertised.”

At E-Veezy, we use Alpitronic ultra-rapid chargers using modern high-power charging technology. However, there is more behind the speed shown on a charger than the charger itself. The 200kW or 400kW figure shown is the maximum power the unit can make available; it is not a promise that every vehicle will draw that amount throughout every charging session.

The actual charging speed is largely determined by the vehicle. The car continuously communicates with the charger and requests the level of power its battery can safely accept at that moment. That requested power can change throughout the session depending on factors such as battery temperature, state of charge, the vehicle’s battery-management system and its individual DC charging curve.

For example, even if a vehicle is capable of charging at a maximum of 150kW, it may request only 100kW at a particular point in the session. As the battery fills, charging speeds commonly reduce, and a cold or very warm battery may also accept less power until it reaches an appropriate operating temperature.

This is why two visits to the same ultra-rapid charger can produce different charging speeds, even when the charger is operating normally. If a charging session at E-Veezy appears unusually slow, customers are welcome to contact us with the date, time, charger used and vehicle details so that the session can be reviewed.

A public charging hub designed around real journeys

The best EV charging experience is not simply about putting the highest possible number on a charger. Location, reliability, availability, pricing and what a driver can do while charging all matter.

E-Veezy’s Manor Royal hub has been designed around those everyday needs. Whether you are a local resident topping up, a business driver moving between appointments, a van driver keeping a working vehicle on the road, or heading towards Gatwick Airport, the aim is the same: make charging feel like an easy part of the journey rather than a disruption.

If you have not visited us before, you can find E-Veezy at Northwood Park, Gatwick Road, Manor Royal, Crawley, Gatwick, RH10 9XN. The charging hub is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
